RDC celebrate with Bradford couple after they finally become the owners of their rented garden, almost three decades after they first tried to buy the land
David and Josie Boothroyd had tended the garden next to their home in Summerbridge Drive, Eccleshill, for more than 35 years, and made a first bid to Bradford Council in 1989.
In September last year, the authority put the land up for auction and it was sold for £20,000. But the deal then fell through.
After reviewing its position, the Council agreed to sell the land – which has a covenant on it allowing it to be used as a private garden only and is also thought to be the site of the Eccleshill Holy Well – to the Boothroyds, based on a previous valuation of around £2,500
The couple held a party to celebrate with friends who had backed their bid, and Chris Jones, from RDC Solicitors in Bingley, who took on their case for free.
They said: “We are delighted that this has finally been resolved.”
