A Suspended Jail Sentence for Husband
There have been further interesting developments in the case involving Michael Prest.
A suspended jail sentence has been imposed upon the rich oil tycoon for not paying his ex-wife her divorce settlement. Mrs Prest had alleged that he had failed to pay her £17.5 million that she had been awarded.
The High Court concluded that Mr Prest had failed to make a capital payment to his ex-wife as well as maintenance for her and their four children. The four week prison sentence has been suspended for three months. It seems that Mr Prest owed his former wife and children more than £360,000 in unpaid maintenance.
It appeared that the Judge in the case was of the view that Mr Prest had the means to pay but had refused or neglected to do so.
This case demonstrates that the Family Court will take action in circumstances such as these. Whilst clearly the case involved large financial assets no doubt similar sanctions could apply in cases involving more modest circumstances. This is clearly a warning to parties who for whatever reason refuse to comply with orders of the Court.
