Do not DIY it, RDC it!
There is so much talk these days about doing your own divorce without legal assistance! Is this really a good idea? Should you really be able to buy a divorce kit alongside the latest issue of Heat magazine and a family size Dairy Milk? This is not air fix, a divorce is a serious legal matter that needs to be dealt with by a professional.
So many times clients contact us in a distressed state. They have embarked upon divorce proceedings themselves only to encounter problems which they have been unable to resolve. They are unfamiliar with the terminology and the procedures. They are frightened of the process and realise that whilst they may have thought it was easy and they could save money by dealing with it themselves, this has not proved to be the case. They realise that they need professional assistance. We are only too pleased to help them. However, sometimes a situation has been unintentionally created by an inexperienced client, which can take some little time to unravel and resolve. Had an experienced Family Lawyer been instructed at the outset then this would not have been the case. Added to that, the client can often find that their stress levels have increased, as a result of being involved in a process with which they are unfamiliar and this not only has a bearing upon their health but also upon their personal relationships and employment as well. Securing expert legal advice at the beginning of the process helps to achieve peace of mind.
Judith Fitzpatrick, the Family Law Partner at RDC has commented that “When my car breaks down, I would not try and fix it myself, preferring instead to take it to an experienced mechanic. When my central heating system fails in winter, I would consult a plumber who is an expert in the field. The same applies to the divorce process. Often the issues that need to be resolved are not simply those arising from the actual dissolution of the marriage, but also can include complicated financial arrangement relating to properties, capital and pensions as well as difficulties over the children. Seeking expert legal advice at the beginning can save time, and money in the long run and more importantly eases what can often be a difficult period in one’s life.”
