Site Waste Management Plans - Christmas cheer for the construction industry?
On 1 December 2013 the government abolished the need for site waste management plans for building sites in England. Previously any building projects worth over £300,000 had to have such a plan.
Site Waste Management Plans no longer need to be produced before construction begins on a development.
One the one hand this is good news in particular for small -medium constructions companies, reducing costs and paperwork requirements.
But is this offset by environmental concerns? It is true that construction companies still have to jump through hoops to comply with other aspects of environmental legislation but there is real concern that fly tipping and heavy reliance on landfill will increase.
Reassuringly many businesses have indicated that they will probably retain the plan in some form or other as they believe that implementing them saves money for their business in the long term and reduces their carbon footprint.
