DIY Divorces - Are they are a good or bad idea?
Judith Fitzpatrick is often asked the question “is it possible for me to do my divorce myself without employing a solicitor?”
Of course it is. There is nothing to stop you undertaking the process yourself if that is what you want to do. There are more and more online sites offering a range of services for divorcing couples at what might appear to be attractive prices. However, Judith would urge caution. The divorce procedure is not as easy as it might appear to be, in particular when there are issues revolving around finances and children. Tackling the procedure yourself may seem cost effective but is it really quite so “cheap” as you might think?
As with many services, be they employing a plumber to fix your leak or a mechanic to repair your vehicle, it is often the best course of action to get specialist advice at an early stage which can in the long run save you time, worry and more importantly money if things do not pan out as you would have expected. It can be more expensive for you to appoint a Lawyer to unravel the difficulties, albeit well intentioned, that you may have created through trying to work out everything yourself.
Specialist Family Law advice need not be as expensive as you might think. We at RDC can tailor our fees and the level of our input to whatever you might require. We can at an early stage agree the extent of our involvement and we can work out the likely costs and if needs be agree a payment plan. Is it not preferable to have the support and guidance of a qualified Lawyer at what can often be an emotionally distressing time, to guide you through the process and to share the burden of what can sometimes be a frightening and anxious process?
We may make the procedure look easy but that is because at RDC we have years of experience and we apply our expertise to each and every case that we undertake. Each and every one of our clients is important to us.
We would therefore say, by all means, explore the possibility of DIY divorces and online sites but there is no substitute for the personal, professional service that RDC offers.
